Methadone Access and Policy Study Effects of federal policy changes on methadone treatment and outcomes
Project Overview:
The Methadone Access and Policy Study (MAPS) evaluates the real-world impact of recent federal revisions to 42 CFR Part 8, which were designed to make methadone treatment more flexible and accessible by expanding take-home medication allowances and adjusting dosing practices to support treatment retention. Using de-identified health records from Community Medical Services (CMS) clinics operating across 12 states, the study examines changes in take-home dosing during the first 90 days of treatment, patterns of methadone titration in the first 7 days, and 90-day retention. A difference-in-differences approach compares states that adopted the new regulations with those that did not, enabling assessment of whether the updated policies have improved retention, optimized dosing, and increased access. Findings will offer evidence-based guidance for policymakers, clinicians, and treatment programs on strategies to strengthen methadone care and address the ongoing opioid crisis.
